Chapter Seventeen
One year ago...
âWhat exactly do you expect me to do?â the guy asked, standing in the front room of Janelle's apartment as his wife continued to load some items into a box. âShe missed her last rent payment. She hasn't answered my calls. Looks to me like she just took off with her kid and abandoned the place.â
âYou can't toss her stuff out,â Jenna told him.
âNo-one's tossing anything out,â he said with a sigh. âListen, Janelle never actually had a proper rental agreement, okay? I took pity on her a while back and let her stay here, she was paying me on time each month so I was happy to let things slide. But now she's gone and I can't afford to leave the place standing empty, so I'm putting all her stuff into storage. If she ever comes back, it'll be waiting for her in the lock-up in the basement, but my hands are tied here. I need the money.â
âWe could try to stop this,â Jenna said, turning to John. âWe could get an order to -â
âThere's no point,â he replied before she was able to finish. âI really don't think that there'll be anything here that can tell us where she went.â
âWe've tried everything else,â she pointed out. âJohn, I know I promised to help out, but this is starting to feel like a complete dead end. Do you know how many people vanish each year without a trace, just in this country alone? It's enough to make your eyes pop out on stalks. There are usually around half a million reports every year, and unless you've been living under a rock you'll know that our resources are kinda stretched. It's not like anyone has even reported this woman missing yet.â
âI'm reporting her missing,â he told her.
âYou don't have standing to do that.â
âMy gut's telling me that something is seriously wrong here.â
âWho are you,â she replied, âand what did you do with the real John Tench? Seriously, you've never been the kind of guy who talks about gut feelings and stuff like that. You've always worked by the book, you've always followed the rules, and now suddenly you're talking about gut instincts.â She paused, watching him carefully as if she was trying to read his mind. âWho is this Janelle woman really, John? Is she someone you've... become close to?â
âI'm worried about her son. That's all.â
âOkay, fine,â she said, rolling her eyes, âbut you seem to be putting a hell of a lot of energy into a case that doesn't really stand out from all the others.â
âThat's because it's close to home,â he told her, âand I feel like I'm missing something. And if I'm honest, I also feel like there's still a chance to fix this. Something's going on right under my nose and so far I'm stumbling around in the dark. I don't like being made to look like a fool, Jenna.â He paused again. âJanelle wouldn't just leave in the middle of the night like this.
